Are fluoride treatments helpful?

Parents are always looking for different treatments and methods they can implement to improve their child’s oral health. Fluoride treatments are commonly used by our dental care team at Hirsch Pediatric Dentistry, but do they even do anything for your child’s smile? Continue reading on to find out if fluoride treatments are helpful.

Do we even need fluoride?

Fluoride is a natural mineral found in many foods, water, and stones. It is an effective way to fight the risk of tooth decay as it strengthens the tooth’s enamel and protects the canal of each individual tooth. Fluoride has been found to be especially helpful for children as their primary teeth are still developing. It is also known to be an important step in reversing the effects of tooth decay. Individuals affected by the following issues could also benefit from additional fluoride treatments:

  • People with eating disorders
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Lack of oral hygiene
  • Poor diet
  • Exposed roots of teeth
  • Tooth enamel defects
  • Existing restorations to the teeth

Different types of fluoride treatments

Topical treatments are directly applied to the tooth’s enamel. Toothpastes, mouthwashes, and professional treatments come in this form. Systemic treatments are ingested and can be taken through fluoridated water and supplements. Our dental team encourages brushing teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and drinking sufficient levels of fluoridated water. However, often times an additional fluoride treatment can be incredibly effective in the fight against tooth decay and other issues.
