Is Sedation Dentistry/General Anesthesia Safe For Children?

Dec 21, 2018

When it comes to your child and healthcare, you want them to be as safe as possible right? At Hirsch Pediatric Dentistry, we feel the exact same way and are dedicated to providing the safest and healthiest options for our pediatric dental patients. We often get asked questions by parents about sedation dentistry and general anesthesia and whether or not it is a safe and healthy option for their child. At Hirsch Pediatric Dentistry, we do not recommend general anesthesia for our pediatric dental patients for a number of reasons.

Did you know that a physician is not allowed to administer anesthesia while also performing a medical procedure? This, however, isn’t the case for a dentist due to different regulating bodies. A dentist is allowed to administer sedation dentistry simply with the help of a dental assistant and a training course which only takes a few hours.

Throughout the United States, numerous children have died as a result of sedation dentistry. While many of the children are under the age of 7, even older children have experienced complications resulting in a fatality. Complications can even occur after the child has left the dental practice, due to the fact many dentists are not properly monitoring patients following their procedure.

So, what exactly can you do as a parent? Skip the sedation dentistry! Children have been undergoing dental treatments for years without the need for any medications or drugs. At Hirsch Pediatric Dentistry, we recommend starting dentistry from an early age, allowing your child to become familiar with the experience. Talking about the importance of a healthy smile and visits to the dentist can also greatly help to reduce any anxiety.
